Thoughts of Spring

I know, it's really delusions of Spring with the temperature staying in the 20-30's and the promise of more snow in the forecast, but like many gardeners, we have been drooling over seed catalogs and spent our evenings planning and scheming ways to get more produce out of our gardens. And seeing as we are again playing the waiting game with the State as we wait for the appraiser to contact us, we just can't sit on our hands. With that in mind, our hands have been busy with a few acquisitions that should make our gardening endeavors  more profitable. Our first acquisition was this great set of shelves we got from the Habitat Restore here in town.

we'll use this to start our seeds and prepare them for transplant once the weather warms. As you can see we have the first of several grow lights in place and a fine crop of lettuce and Swiss chard already providing us with some fresh greens. Over the next month, we'll add some more grow lights to the shelves so that each can hold its own crop of seedlings.  I love potential!!
Speaking of potential here are the seeds we have purchased so far. You'll notice there a quite a few flower seeds as well, those are to feed the soul and to invite beneficial bugs and birds to our garden as well.  We are working on becoming more organic in our gardening endeavors and our reading (Great Garden Companions by Sally Jean Cunningham) describes a system where you mix food crops with compatible flowers and herbs that discourage pests and invite beneficial bugs to the garden.

So, As we wait for the machine of State government to grind through it's processes, we are still moving forward. Maybe in 10-15 weeks we'll be closer to building and definitely closer to getting our garden planted.
